Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Recap
Yesterday’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon attracted talent from across the country and world. Kenya’s Augustine Choge took first on the men’s side in a hard to fathom time of 1:03:25. He outran American Scott Smith (Flagstaff, AZ) by 1 minute and 39 seconds. The women’s finish was a bit tighter. Ethiopia’s Buze Diribe bested crowd-favorite and Pennsylvania bred, Neely Spence by 17 seconds with a time of 1:11:49.
PRTC athletes also gave spectators much to cheer for. In particular, two of our women made their debut in the half-marathon distance. Congratulations to both Sam Roecker and Kylie Pearse.
Sam proved her decision to take on the half was wise. She placed 8th overall with a time of 1:20:29. Even more encouraging, Sam (24), was 2nd in her age group. With her first shot at the half in the books, it will surely be exciting to watch her progress over future attempts. Nice work Sam!
Kylie achieved a time of 1:28:05 and was the 31st women to cross the line. Kylie fared well in her first attempt at the half-marathon distance as well. Her prior longest race was the Broad Street 10 miler this past spring, a much friendlier distance and course. Kylie (23) also placed well in her age division with a result of 6th.
On the men’s side, PRTC friend, Duriel Hardy, finished an impressive 5th with a time of 1:06:54. Duriel dominated local competition and earned the title “First Philadelphian” by a margin of 4 minutes and 26 seconds. Not impressive enough? To achieve this, Duriel completed just 8 weeks of half-marathon training while maintaining residency with Penn at CHOP!
Ramon Laboy, of Back on My Feet, was next in at 1:17:42 crossing the line in 42nd overall. PRTC’s own Breandan Lyman followed shortly thereafter in 1:18:16. Breandan was 15th in his age group. Congratulations to all!
T-Shirts (Orders due at noon today)
Late last week, we announced a fundraiser for PRTC. We’re aiming to raise money to elevate the level of support we offer members. Funds will go toward helping defray costs of club travel (ex: USATF XC Nationals in Tallahassee, FL), race entries and also allow us to expand our uniform and apparel offerings.
Details: Philadelphia Runner has agreed to sell t-shirts featuring our new logo in their store. All profit from the store’s sales will go directly to PRTC. They plan to place an order of 200 t-shirts. The store will also be hosting a launch party on our behalf. (More info to come soon!)
In addition to store sales, we’ll also be selling directly to friends, family and other supporters. The more direct sales we do, the higher overall volume we’ll be able to move. To help the club (and secure a cool t-shirt) see below!
How to Participate: Send an email (by noon today) to firstname.lastname@example.org with anticipated # of sales. Include desired color/size/gender. Email Justin even if it’s just an order for yourself! Payment / 100% commitment not needed at this time. We’re just looking to provide an accurate estimate to the store. We’ll then establish a direct-sales inventory and distribute as orders become official and payments arrive. If you reserve a t-shirt through Justin, we’ll be sure to keep the appropriate size/color/gender in stock for you.
Details: Price: $25. Colors: Red, Gray and Pink (women only). Sizes: Men and women’s fits in small, medium and large. Please note style/coloring will be a bit different than the example below. Arrival: mid-October.
Challenge Update: We have confirmed 62 direct sales from PRTC members so far. The store is ordering 200 t-shirts for on-location sales. That puts our total at 262 or just 39 away from topping other Philly group, RUN 215, and their first night of sales (300) during a similar event. Let’s try and match their success!
Tuesday: Franklin Field at 6:15 PM. Enter through Brysi Cafe. Workout will start at 6:30 PM. Men: 6-8 x 1200 with 1 lap rest. Women: 6-8 x 1200 with 1 lap rest. Other workouts available through Penn Running Club and not yet announced PRTC groups.
Wednesday: 7:00 PM: USATF Mid-atlantic annual meeting. Fort Washington, PA.
